Successful managers use a combination of seven “leadership levers” to help their organizations attain superior performance. These levers—shown and briefly described in Exhibit 1—have been used by such CEOs as Gil Amelio in his turnaround of National Semiconductor, Ken Melrose in restoring The Toro Company to profitability, and Frances Hesselbein, who transformed the Girl Scouts of America from a moribund organization to a thriving and vital nonprofit entity that Peter Drucker once called “the best managed organization in the United States.” The levers used by these and other managers to help lead their organizations to high performance not only are important individually, but, as the lines in Exhibit 1 indicate, they also must fit with and reinforce each other.
